On the eve of the release of their second album Jungle Songs, noisy Melbourne dreamscapers Parading offer up this slice of classic Australiana — a cover of Paul Kelly’s ‘Big Heart’.

Originally appearing on the Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls album of 1987 Under the Sun (the same album that spawned the hits ‘To Her Door’ and ‘Dumb Things’ and launched PK into household-name status), the Parading take on ‘Big Heart’ draws out the tempo and strips back the layers to reveal the song’s barest essentials — the winsome melody and sorrowful sentiment.

The most straight-ahead pop song on Jungle Songs, ‘Big Heart’ nevertheless receives the full Parading treatment including an unhinged Keith Mason guitar feedback instrumental passage way off in the distance somewhere, adding a little extra unease to what might otherwise present as a feel-good love song.

“Everyone’s asleep but you’re still awake” sings Tom Barry, his strained, world-weary voice adding extra gravitas to the the song’s final line “You know that you give me much more than I can take”.

Recorded with producer Richard Andrew (Underground Lovers), ‘Big Heart’ — along with the ‘Butterfly’ single from earlier this year — will appear on Parading’s Jungle Songs album, out on November 11 through Lost And Lonesome.
