about

Lost And Lonesome are delighted to announce Tim Richmond Group's new album What's in the Middle? to be released on July 1, 2016.

The follow-up to Richmond's strikingly understated 2012 'solo' album Dot is an altogether different affair, with elements of funk, dark electronica and 60s pastoral sounds finding their way into the Melbourne musician's skewed pop/folk repertoire.

Case in point is first single 'Come to Papa' — drummer Joe Alexander (Terrible Truths) and bassist Mark Monnone (ex-Lucksmiths) work up a heady groove throughout the verse before climbing to the chorus — a waltz-y singalong custom-made for when the footy's sailing through the big posts, into the crowd.

On ‘Good Word’ — the dark synth-heavy epic that forms the album’s centrepiece — Richmond’s nonchalant vocal and guitar are clear and concise atop a hip hop drumbeat put to tape by Peter Luscombe of Paul Kelly-fame.

‘The Book’ meanwhile takes a good look out the back door, with its chooglin’ porch-side bassline and Richmond’s heart-worn narrative investigating the collapse of a relationship. The song’s radiant acoustic strum finds itself at home among the great Australian songwriters of the lyrical tradition — The Go-Betweens, Triffids et al.

Produced by John Lee (Lost Animal, The Ancients) at Phaedra Studios in Melbourne, What’s in the Middle? is as warm in delivery as it is far reaching in ambition.

Mark Monnone — bass guitar
Joe Alexander — drums
